Discs of the year: Playing by ear

Doug Taylor's high fives

Dave Marsh, The True Love Rules (New Scotland) Bursting from behind the Emergency skins, Marsh reveals mad guitar chops and a kinship with everyone from Jimmy Webb to Slade. This mature and reflective album morphs into a colossal stomper live, as on Natal Day weekend at Alderney Landing.

Rock and Roll Show with the JPE
Sault Ste. Marie , Algoma Fall Festival , this sat . Oct. 18 .
The glamour begins with a 4:15 am shocker and a city wide round up to get to the airport for a 6:20 bastard to Montreal . But it doesn't take long to set into road mode , a little Tim's Tea , and the next thing you are in Montreal , and the fiery sunrise taking off from Trudeau was all glory . At Pearson the whole gang meets down at 124 where the Dash 8 's depart for the north . The little planes are better than the jets . They take a little longer but the advantages are more leg room and lower, slower views . And for all the trouble , I want propellers .
Sault Ste Marie was 5 flights and no sleep for two days . And I guess that's the way we like it .

EXCLAIM! Review
Dave Marsh The True Love Rules
By Vish Khanna

Dave Marsh is a gifted songwriter and his fixation on edgy pop rock has yielded the best record from Halifax’s over-30 set in years. Sitting behind the Super Friendz and the Joel Plaskett Emergency as a solidly inventive drummer, Marsh is more than an unsung sideman and, on rare occasions, his distinctive compositions have snuck onto records by these aforementioned bands. The True Love Rules is Marsh’s first opportunity to stretch out and explore a crossroads that finds punk, glam rock, new wave and folk colliding beautifully. He invites past and present collaborators to help his shape infectious compositions, many of which celebrate Halifax. The big rock of “Backstreets Thread” is a fun roll call for local cronies, while traces of ’70s era Bowie are all over “Darling You, Nothing Else Matters” and “Move You Around.” There’s a cool kind of passion on The True Love Rules, a thoughtfully layered bit of cocky rock’n’roll by Dave Marsh. Rock drummers 'are top athletes'

Blondie's Clem Burke took part in the study
Playing the drums for a rock band requires the stamina of a Premiership footballer, research suggests.
Tests on Clem Burke, the veteran Blondie drummer, revealed that 90 minutes of drumming could raise his heart rate to 190 beats a minute.
Despite rock's reputation for unhealthy living, Dr Marcus Smith, from Chichester University, said drummers needed "extraordinary stamina".
A hour in concert could burn between 400 and 600 calories, he said.
Clem Burke, who provided the beat for hits such as "Heart of Glass", "Atomic" and "Call Me" was invited to take part in the eight-year project by Blondie fan Dr Smith.
It is hoped that the results could help develop outreach programmes for overweight children who are not interested in sport.
It is clear that their fitness levels need to be outstanding
Dr Marcus SmithChichester University
Burke was connected to equipment to measure his heart rate and oxygen uptake, and the levels of lactic acid in his blood.
He found that during a performance, his heart averaged between 140 and 150 beats a minute, peaking at 190, levels comparable to other top athletes.
However, Dr Smith said that while top footballers were expected to perform once or twice a week, drummers on tour would be doing it every night at a different venue.

Drummers burn 4-600 calories per hour
He said: "Footballers can normally expect to play 40 to 50 games a year - but in one 12 month period, Clem played 90-minute sets at 100 concerts.
"Footballer find playing a Champions League game once every two weeks a drain, but these guys are doing it every day when they are on tour.
"It is clear that their fitness levels need to be outstanding - through monitoring Clem's performance in controlled conditions, we have been able to map the extraordinary stamina required by professional drummers."
The project was conducted jointly by the University of Gloucestershire and the University of Chichester.
A dedicated "drumming laboratory" is now being built at the Gloucester campus and it is hoped that other professional drummers will be tested.
Dr Steve Draper, from Gloucestershire University, said: "This is the first facility of its kind in the world."
Professor Edward Winter, a specialist in the physiology of exercise at Sheffield University, said that the challenge of playing the drums should not be underestimated.
He said that at 190 beats per minute Clem Burke was probably exceeding the maximum heart rate predicted for a man of his age.
"Rock drumming in particular is very energetic, and to add to this, these guys are playing in a hot environment - you'll see them literally dripping with sweat."

Remember that night in Quebec city ?

Moose, Joel Plaskett and Quebec City
Posted by josephyarmush on May 08, 2007
last thursday, a few members of kill the lights had to quit the band. not due to infighting or artistic differences. that's shit. but due to the fact that yann and joseph hit a moose and almost died. that's a real reason. it was thursday last, and we were driving to quebec with a few friends to party and see a joel plaskett concert. you don't need a good reason to either of those, because they both are usually good times. we're making good time, eating chips or whatever, and we drive through Trois Rivieres, the industrious town between Montreal and Quebec. The stars are out, we're surrounded by spruce trees and Neil Young comes on the radio. Its almost too Canadian. But, no. More Canadian would be a moose running across the highway! Yep, the scariest thing a motorist who's doing 120 km/hr could see 50 meters in front of him. So I start slowly saying, "moose, moose" because I'm a little surprised at the Farley Mowatt novel unfolding in front of my eyes. As we rapidly approach the 7 ft Yoko, I'm yelling, "MOOSE!!!". The brakes screech, I duck and there's a very loud "smack". We don't know if we're alive, injured or what. It's too early to tell. I hear, "are you alright?", everyone responds "yeah" with a holy-fuck-did-that-just-happen?! tone in their voices. We get out of the car, there's a sedan in the ditch across the highway, and the moose is on the shoulder of the road with it's legs going every way. There are hugs all around, then stares, then wide eyed gawking at the moose, the car in the ditch and ourselves. It was weird. So the cops shot the moose, we got towed to Quebec and walked in to the Joel Plaskett concert during "Snowed In". Caught his last 5 songs, drank 6000 shots of whiskey and danced all night in the old town. It was great. Kill the Lights will fortunately stick around and look out this summer for shows and we can tell the story in person.joe

Exclaim! Hootenanny 2008

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2565090&id=874440360&ref=nf
grant lawrence
; It was a scene out of hell . On stage The Halifax-Dartmouth Ferries peeled through their set like a well oiled sea bird . Down front were 20 , 30 , who knows , maybe a hundred , ageing teenage zombie punks . Dressed in black satin jackets , and running flick combs through their jet black duck tails , it could only be one posse , The Drinky Birds . A rougue dance squad outta the Ottawa Bytown Billionairs Hockey Club with a thirst for Keiths beer and mock violence .
The Ferries held the high ground , the stage , for 5 or 6 tunes . We was honouring ( guilty , Your Honour ) Doo Wop . It was noisy to be sure .Cacophonous , would be kind . The one hour of rehearsal was NOT ENOUGH REHEARSAL . But none of that mattered now , because the stage was set , and the rumble was on . The Drinky Birds came looking for trouble and that's exactly what they got . They stormed the stage like so many sore old men digging in the back of a pick up truck for a crowbar . Eventually they made it up . Knife - combs were produced , wrists were tied together and to the unfunkiest Beat It imaginable , white T's blossomed crimson red with blood . ( fake blood mind , something the Billionaires concocted involving creme da cassis and urine ) . The horror ; Ferry Hilliard was tossed from the stage as if he was some dude wearing a skin tight gold lame sock hop suit . Which he was . Rob Pierce and Carl Gosine tried to dance for peace but were pushed too far . Carls giant afro wig serving as a rallying point for agro . Murph took a thirty tooth comb to the generous belly . Rolly was swinging for the fences . Microphone stands swung in all directions and may have displaced a tooth or two . From the drums it was a terrible / hilarious sight .During Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay , and led by that evil little bastard elf , Blake Jacobs , all hell broke loose . There was much shoving , hurling of insults and some of the most jive turkey dancing you never wanted to see . Pure anarchy . Watch for youtube scenes that will Shock .

Saturday, March 22, 2008

Well ,the Ferries played their final game of the 2008 Exclaim !Cup this afternoon and finished with a hard fought 4-4 tie vs the gd Ottawa Billionaires . Holding the lead late into the third , and like salmon returning to the very stream they were spawned out of , The Ferries concocted an 0-2-1 record in a familiar , spectacularly fashioned , collapse . Standout effort from Ryan MacDonald in nets , saving the Ferries from a possible drubbing . Still , best game of the three .
Tonight it's the Hootenanny at the Elmo and the Sha Na Na meltdown .

All weekend , friday and saturday at York University , and Sunday , De La Salle College Arena , the teams will slug it out for Who Has The Most Well Concealed Ringer glory . But that's only the beginning , every evening competive Hootenanny gigs eat whats left of the good will at the El Mocambo . This year The Ferries pay tribute to Sha Na Na , Saturday night 12:30 .Drop by and throw a can of soup .

The ECMA are done for another year .
AYE'S THE BY'S , BUT BRAIN CELLS

How else could you explain the surreal pub crawl ; the blackeye WITHIN 6 HOURS of arrival ; delivered by a man in a robins egg blue tuxedo and probable speedo . Everyone knows , " Here , catch ! " , ALWAYS comes first ... then the actual toss . Not at the ECMA . At that yearly baccahnal , grown men lock themselves out of their hotel room , naked , retrieving the paper ( if the newspaper didn't shut down overnight ) and like a Peter Sellers out-take , make their way with all the dignity they can muster to the nearest associate's room , knocking politely but really firmly . Open UP ya bastards ! . Only a pinched tea towel and a cell phone camera seperating them from immortal youtube stardom .;
It could be worse , if it's possible . Because getting T-boned at a major intersection on day one just ain't a lot of laughs . If you are driving . To the rest of us however , after t,he medical clearance , it's fair game . It all was a bit of a game hunt for some .
For us , monday brought sour heads , high winds , blowing snow , and a chance to pile a couple of liquid Aussies in the back of the suburban and head out to Halifax . To the Tiki where we would decamp , assess our assets , and put on the Faces , no doubt . It was not to be .
Somewhere between Fredericton and Nova Scotia , some joker changed the signs and we let it roll down the highway for a good 30 K before noticing a map at the Kings Landing Big Stop . You Are Here, it said, or spelled . Circled in pencil . Several times . As if this had been a topic of incomphehension before . " Isth thet da why ta Howee facks ?" Geoff the Aussie croaked halfway through a mouthful of dorritos and Monster Chaos energy drink . " .... No ", I admitted in all honesty . " We have to turn around and drive through that frigid white , wind tunnel again ... to get to Fredericton . And the Hotel .
Ah , the ECMA .

Thursday, February 07, 2008

ECMA time again already ? Good luck to all the musician types .

Friday, January 04, 2008

Heads up Australia ! Attention , Victoria . Hang about , Queensland . Spare change ? , New South Wales . And , of course , ... show us your map of Tassie . Ahem .
Joel Plaskett is in/ on his way to OZ for a month of shows ( alas solo ) ....( good name for a record , me finks ) all over the east and south . He'll be touring with Tim Freedman , and others we'll figure out soon .

He'll be working hard and will be down under for his third trip within 18 months or so . Almost feel sorry for him . But it's minus 11 today , so I don't .
The band had a great tour last spring with Augie March and you can relive all the excitement in the march , 2007 , archives of this very organ .
Catch him if you can and Canadia will be caught .
